Watching something happen does not make you a participant, it makes you an audience member, or more technically a voyeur.
Indeed, if your interactions with some aspect of a research project were contributing to gains toward a scientific/engineering/educational result, then indeed you’d have been a participant. In short, yes, you actually would have to be pushing a few buttons.
